The gala, powered by its sponsors Kingdom and Cooperative Bank, showcased the power of community and corporate support in nurturing sports at grassroot level

The second edition of the Kiambu Inter County Clubs Invitational Swimming Championships culminated on a special tone on Sunday as young swimming sensation Vahkeinah Leboy produced a stunning performance to win the 12-13 years 50m butterfly event.

Representing the Torpedo Swim Club in Eldoret, Leboy’s win wasn’t just about her personal best time of 33.25 seconds or the standing ovation she received from the audience, but the fact that she was doing that on her birthday, and with her father - whose shoes she is purposed to fill - watching by.

Hillary Leboy, a former competitive swimmer, currently serves as the second Vice President of Kenya Aquatics, and doubles down as the Governor of Uasin Gishu County Aquatics Association.

“Really excited for this feat,” Leboy said of her daughter’s performance. “This underscores the immense work her and the team have been putting in. The club trains daily for two hours and with this dedication, we are now nurturing Olympic-level swimmers in the county.”

As a result of the team win, Torpedo Swim Club is organizing a super marathon swimming training camp in December set to refine techniques, build stamina and prepare swimmers for stronger performances in the upcoming mid-season.

In the event’s overall results, Seahorses Aquatics from Machakos emerged as the overall champions of the event held at the MPesa Foundation Academy in Thika, tallying a total 79 medals.

Swift Kids Swim Club from Kisumu came in second with 68 medals, with Supermalins Swim Club from Kiambu rounding off the podium positions with 58 medals.

The championship, a hub for swimming talent, featured clubs like Braeburn Swimming Club, Nyahururu Elite from Nyandarua and Zefish Swim Club from Kajiado.

Among the Kenya Aquatics officials present was Secretary General Hon. Collins Marigiri who pledged to foster collaboration with counties to elevate swimming and other aquatic sports from the grassroots level to the global stage.

Zelfish’s Ronnie Muchoki was the winner of the seniors’ category with 57 points, with Faith Buchera claiming the 16 and over years prize with 31 points.

The pair of Jonathan Weru and Amanda Mukoto won the 14-15 years individual category, with Swift Kids Club’s Ryan Juma and Alala Melissa of Seahorses Aquatics winning the 8-9 years category.
